Alfredo Behrens
A business environment is all too frequently devoid of illusions. That is when it becomes a frightening place, one where co-workers feel they cannot suspend vigilance because trust was washed away and the renewed asepsis becomes painfully threatening. Can one instil into the business environment the lost fantasy? If leadership were all about seduction, as I happen to believe, we could find cues in romance to recapture the elusive fantasy. What´s your opinion? Alfredo Behrens
Quantos gigantes mais tem soltos por ai? Comments in English below.
Gláucio has grit. He is ambitious, decisive, a calculated risk taker and responsible too. At 31 years of age he brings up his family of two toddlers and a wife.
His career path was influenced by an aunt and a friend. The first led him into a job at a small bikini factory. In a decade he had outgrown the company and needed a change. That is when he received the advice of a friend who was driving a taxi. It looked good and Gláucio took the chance.
Gláucio is doing well, but as a management scholar I cannot help but wonder whether this is an effective way of allocating Brazil's scarce talent.
What if large multinationals would not screen the Gláucios out for not knowing English? After all, English can be learned while growing within a large company.
Why is it that proficiency in English is demanded at entry when it is widely known that such proficiency is only acquired among the upper middle classes?
In a country whose language is Portuguese, requiring English proficiency at entry rewards applicants for trainee jobs for the virtues of their parents, because it their parents who paid for such learning.
One thing is for sure, multinationals which screen trainees this way are failing at their mission to be agents of change in emerging markets; they are failing their headquarters mandate for increased diversity in their workforce; and are also failing at coming closer to the Bottom of the Pyramid, where most of the future stream of profits is to come from.
